Record U.S. soybean crop in 2015

The U.S. produced a record amount of soybeans in 2015.

The USDA reports the bean crop topped 3.930 billion bushels with an average yield of 48.0 bushels per acre. Planted area was 82.650 million acres with harvested area of 81.849 million. The USDA says record yields were recorded in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota. 2015 objective yield data for seven of the eleven surveyed states were above year ago levels, with pod counts increasing more than 100 pods per 18 square feet in Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, and Nebraska. In 2014, soybean production totaled 3.927 billion bushels with an average yield of 47.5 bushels per acre on planted area of 83.276 million acres and harvested area of 82.591 million.

Corn came out at 13.601 billion bushels with an average yield of 168.4 bushels per acre. Corn planted area was 87.999 million acres with harvested area of 80.749 million. The USDA reports record yields in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. 2015 objective yield data was the highest on record for the combined ten states used in that survey, with record high ear counts in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, and South Dakota. In 2014, corn production totaled 14.216 billion bushels with an average yield of 171.0 bushels per acre on planted area of 90.597 million acres and harvested area of 83.136 million.

Corn for silage totaled 126.984 million bushels with an average yield of 20.4 bushels per acre on a harvested area of 6.221 million acres. In 2014, silage totaled 128.048 million bushels with an average yield of 20.1 bushels per acre on a harvested area of 6.371 million acres.

All wheat production was 2.052 billion bushels with an average yield of 43.6 bushels per acre. Planted area was 54.644 million acres with harvested area of 47.094 million. In 2014, all wheat totaled 2.026 billion bushels with an average yield of 43.7 bushels per acre on planted area of 56.841 million acres and harvested area of 46.385 million.

Winter wheat production was 1.370 billion bushels with an average yield of 42.5 bushels per acre. Planted area was 39.461 million acres with harvested area of 32.257 million. The USDA reports Michigan notched a new all-time high for average yield. In 2014, winter production totaled 1.377 billion bushels with an average yield of 42.6 bushels per acre on planted area of 42.409 million acres and harvested area of 32.299 million.

Spring wheat production came out at 599.080 million bushels with an average yield of 46.3 bushels per acre. Planted area of 13.247 million acres with harvested area of 12.941 million. Record high yields were reported in Minnesota and North Dakota. In 2014, spring wheat totaled 595.038 million acres with an average yield of 46.7 bushels per acre on planted area of 13.025 million acres and harvested area of 12.740 million.

Durum production was 82.484 million bushels with an average yield of 43.5 bushels per acre. Planted area was 1.936 million acres with harvested area of 1.896 million. Montana produced a record crop and North Dakota had a new all-time high for average yield. In 2014, durum totaled 54.056 million bushels with an average yield of 40.2 bushels per acre on planted area of 1.407 million acres and harvested area of 1.346 million.

Illinois: Corn: 2.013 billion bushels, compared to 2.35 billion in 2014; average yield of 175 bushels per acre, compared to 200 a year ago; Soybeans: 544.32 million bushels, compared to 547.12 million in 2014; average yield of 56 bushels per acre, unchanged from a year ago; Winter Wheat: 33.8 million bushels, compared to 44.89 million in 2014; average yield of 65 bushels per acre, compared to 67 a year ago

Indiana: Corn: 822 million bushels, compared to 1.085 billion in 2014; average yield of 150 bushels per acre, compared to 188 a year ago; Soybeans: 275 million bushels, compared to 301.92 million in 2014; average yield of 50 bushels per acre, compared to 55.5 a year ago; Winter Wheat: 17.68 million bushels, compared to 25.46 million in 2014; average yield of 68 bushels per acre, compared to 76 a year ago
