Former GMO foe ‘I made mistake’

GMO foe-turned-friend Mark Lynas answers questions from the media at the American Farm Bureau Annual Convention, Monday, Jan. 11, 2016, in Orlando.A former foe of genetically modified organisms changed his mind as a result of science.  Mark Lynas says he was motivated when he was younger by hearing that food crops were being genetically modified to resist herbicides.  He was opposed to the notion and took to fields in his home country of Great Britain destroying genetically modified crops.

Although he held scientific opinions about climate change, he admits opinions on GMOs were formed differently.

“You’re motivated by ideology and emotion when you’re an activist,” Lynas told Brownfield Ag News Monday at the American Farm Bureau in Orlando.  “To try and find a scientific basis for what you’re doing is much more of a commitment and involves a lot more work.”

Over time, Lynas came to doubt his reasoning for opposing GMOs.  Lynas’s views are well documented and widely heard.  He spoke about them Monday at the American Farm Bureau convention in Orlando.

“Eventually I had to come out and admit publicly that I’d made a mistake,” he said, “but it took a long time for me to A, admit it to myself and B, admit that to the rest of the world.”
