The U.S. Dairy Export Council is starting a program to increase access to international markets for specialty and artisan cheese producers. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture’s International Trade Team is working with the council.

Lisa Stout, economic development specialist for the trade team, tells Brownfield the department is targeting Asia. She says Wisconsin cheeses face competition from other sources, “Right now, our competition would be European cheeses, cheeses from New Zealand of Australia, but primarily European cheeses, because they’ve been in the market longer than U.S. specialty and artisan cheeses.

A seminar for Wisconsin artisan and specialty cheese producers will be held Thursday, January 21st in Green Bay.
