Campbells Soup shifts to mandatory GMO labeling side

Campbell Soup Company says it now supports legislation for mandatory GMO labeling of foods and has announced it will label whether its products contain or do not contain genetically engineered foods. Charlie Arnot with the Center for Food Integrity says it’s a decision that will please consumers, “Campbells is saying we’re going to come down on the side of consumers and give them the information that is of greatest importance to them.

Campbells, as a member of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, has previously supported a voluntary national GMO labeling. But now the company says it supports mandatory federal labeling.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association continues to support a voluntary system.

Campbells says it believes in the safety of GMO foods and continues to oppose state-by-state labeling laws saying those would be “incomplete, impractical and create unnecessary confusion for consumers.”
