Lamb remains a part of COOL

American Sheep Industry_webThe President of the American Sheep Industry (ASI) says while the World Trade Organization’s ruling on Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) includes beef, pork and poultry, the retaliation ruling does not include lamb.

Burton Pfliger of North Dakota says ASI policy supports lamb being included in COOL because sheep producers believe they have a superior product compared to imported lamb.

“Today’s consumer wants to know more and more about the product, they want to know how it was raised, where it was born, how it was fed and they want to know if it’s sustainable,” Pfliger said. “The only way you can answer that question is follow the identity of that product from farm to fork and we think Country of Origin Labeling fits right in to that.”

Pfliger says ASI policy has supported lamb being included in Country of Origin Labeling for over 20 years.
