Illinois and Missouri are dealing with the impact of huge amounts of rain. There’s major flooding expected along the Mississippi River – from southeastern Iowa through all of Missouri and parts of Illinois.  At Cape Girardeau, in southeast Missouri, the river is expected to reach record flood stage from all this rain and runoff.  Farmers and livestock producers throughout the area and across southern Missouri are watching their barren fields go under water and having to move livestock to higher ground where possible.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency for Missouri. There are many road closures throughout the state because of flash flooding.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has activated the state Emergency Operations Center – which is urging folks not to travel today because of icy roads in most of northern Illinois and flooded roads in central and southern Illinois.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports as of this afternoon, the Mississippi River is above flood stage from Fairport, Iowa to Friar Point, Mississippi.  The river has risen four-or-more inches in the last 24 hours from Alton, Illinois to Chester, Illinois and more than three inches to Wickliffe, Kentucky.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers the National Weather Service anticipates the Mississippi River to crest at 44.8 feet at St. Louis and the surrounding area on Thursday.  If the Midwest doesn’t receive any more substantial rainfall – the Corps says the crest should not breach the levee.
