U.S. ag secretary Tom Vilsack says the historic international climate agreement will help make the world more food-secure.

Vilsack issued a statement following the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) in which he thanked a coalition of global leaders, including President Obama, for aggressively working to address climate change with action and results.

He says the deal supports a better nourished, stable and secure future for every nation including the United States.

A side event of the gathering in Paris was a sustainable forum that Vilsack says outlines benchmarks that build on the ambitious climate-smart strategy being implemented by U.S. farmers, ranchers and foresters in partnership with USDA and the Obama Administration.

He also credited U.S. agriculture with boosting productivity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sharing best practices with counterparts around the world.

President Obama calls the COP21 agreement “the best chance we have to save the planet.”
