Canada warns of immediate COOL retaliation

Lawrence MacAulay

Canada’s Minister of Ag says retaliation will come quickly if the U.S. does not repeal Country of Origin Labeling (COOL).

Lawrence MacAulay issued a statement following Monday’s World Trade Organization (WTO) announcement that COOL discriminates against Canada and Mexico, causing economic harm in excess of $1 billion dollars.

MacAulay says the Government of Canada has made every effort to convince the U.S. to comply with its international trade obligations and has urged the U.S. Senate to join the House of Representatives in calling for the immediate repeal of COOL.

He says if that action is not taken for beef and pork, Canada will quickly take steps to retaliate.

Senate Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts was quoted as saying the Senate will look for all legislative opportunities to repeal COOL, following the WTO decision.
