Sugarbeet harvest in Michigan in the books

Paul Taylor's snowy corn field in May 2014

Michigan farmers finished what remaining harvest activities they could last week despite wet conditions. The last crop progress report from the Michigan Ag Statistics Office says three days were suitable for fieldwork.

Snow cover and poor soil conditions made harvesting any remaining corn virtually impossible. The year finished ahead of average for corn harvest with 96 percent of the crop in bins.  The Michigan Sugar Company received their last load of beets for the year on November 28th.  While farmers do expect a record setting production year, there are long-term storage concerns because of recent warm weather.  Winter wheat condition increased two points from the previous week to 79 percent good to excellent.

The U.S. Drought Monitor still reports some areas of Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas are moderately to abnormally dry.
