Crop season snowed out

Michigan farmers had almost half a week of good weather before the first snowfall of the year. The Michigan Ag Statistics Office says nearly five days were suitable for fieldwork last week. Winter Storm Bella brought anywhere from one to 16 inches of snow over the weekend, with the heaviest precipitation falling in the Southeast.

Michigan’s corn harvest is now 94 percent complete, up 8 percent from last year and 26 percent from the five year average. The state’s winter wheat crop condition remains steady at 77 percent good to excellent.

The U.S. Drought Monitor still reports areas of Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas are moderately to abnormally dry, but the area continues to lessen.
