Biofuels study shows big reduction of GHGs

A new analysis of biofuels consumed under the expanded Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2) shows they have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 354 million metric tons since 2008. That’s a greater number than anticipated, according to the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) which sponsored the study (conducted by Life Cycle Associates, based in California).

The RFA says the reduced emissions are from “technology improvements in grain ethanol production, increased consumption of low-carbon advanced biofuels, and the steadily rising carbon intensity of petroleum fuels.”

RFA President Bob Dinneen says the positive findings will help the Obama Administration in upcoming climate talks in Paris and the EPA’s final rule for the 2014 through 2016 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).
