Demand for high oleic soybeans is growing

Indiana soybean farmer Mike Beard says when the government required trans-fat labeling the soybean oil market lost 4 billion pounds of demand to alternative oils.

DuPont Pioneer marketing manager Andre Trepanier (trep-uh-nay) says because of their oil profile – high oleic soybeans are giving US soybean farmers a chance to regain market share.

And he says the market for high oleic soybeans is rapidly expanding.

Trepanier tells Brownfield food companies are increasing their usage of high oleic soybean oil in their products.  “Probably the most visible one – if people have not noticed is liquid Coffee Mate from Nestle,” he says.  “Nestle has transitioned the entire line-up of liquid Coffee Mate over the last 12 months into using Plenish oil.”

He says high oleic soybean acres have expanded dramatically.  “From 2014-2015 the acres of Plenish soybeans have doubled,” he says.  “From ’15-’16 we anticipate them doubling – or even more.”
