Weather

Blustery & chilly across much of the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, dry weather stretches from the Dakotas to the Ohio Valley. In the Great Lakes region, however, cool, windy conditions persist, accompanied by rain and snow showers. In many areas, corn and soybean harvest activities were complete, or nearly so, when weather conditions began to deteriorate.

On the Plains, A Freeze Warning was in effect early Friday as far south as parts of northern and western Oklahoma. However, a freeze should help to dry down crops—including sorghum—that have not yet been harvested. In contrast, mild weather is returning to the northern Plains in advance of Pacific storminess.

In the South, dry weather prevails, except for a few showers across southern Florida. However, fields have been slow to dry in the wake of recent rainfall, leaving winter wheat planting and summer crop harvesting behind schedule in some areas.

In the West, a heavy precipitation event is well underway in western Washington, where some flash flooding is occurring and river flooding remains a threat. Locally heavy rain and snow showers have spread as far inland as the northern Rockies. Across the remainder of the region, dry weather accompanies a warming trend.
