The intriguing honeybee

Honey Queen Hemesath

The 2015 American Honey Queen spent some time in Wisconsin this week. Gabrielle Hemesath is attending the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association annual meeting in Stevens Point.  She is taking the opportunity to visit elementary schools around the area to not only promote honey but beekeeping as a hobby.  One of the features at the convention is the Kids & Bees Expo on Saturday where kids can see live bees, taste honey, meet Gabrielle and participate in other fun events.

She says she is travelling a lot during her year as American Honey Queen, from Hawaii to Florida and even to the World Beekeeping Convention in South Korea.

Hemesath first became interested in beekeeping while working at a commercial apiary in northeast Iowa. She was so intrigued by the honeybees’ work ethic, she got two hives of her own.  Currently a business major at Iowa State, she plans to have her own commercial apiary someday.  “Probably two-or-three-thousand hives.”
