Weather

An active pattern across the Heartland

A cold front currently stretching from the lower Great Lakes region to the Texas coast will push across the Southeast before stalling. A few strong thunderstorms may occur later Friday in the Southeast. Late-week rainfall could reach 1 to 3 inches across the South, while most of the Northeast will receive one-half inch or less. Meanwhile, storminess will increase across the western U.S., starting in the Pacific Northwest and expanding during the weekend. Five-day precipitation totals could reach 1 to 3 inches in northern California and the Pacific Northwest, with up to an inch expected in the Intermountain West. Another surge of cold air will arrive in the West early next week.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of near- to above-normal temperatures along the Pacific Coast and from the Plains to the Atlantic Seaboard, while, colder-than-normal conditions will cover much of the West. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal precipitation across most of the U.S. will contrast with drier-than-normal weather in a band from central California to the northern High Plains.
