A mild pattern from the Plains, eastward

A storm system currently crossing the Southwest will move northeastward into eastern Canada by week’s end. Locally severe thunderstorms could develop along the storm’s trailing cold front, especially on Thursday and Friday. Storm-total rainfall could reach 1 to 2 inches or more across the South, but will be generally an inch or less across the Plains, Midwest, and Northeast. In the storm’s wake, a cool high-pressure system building eastward will reach the Rockies on Friday and the Ohio Valley by Sunday. Elsewhere, wet weather will return to the Northwest during the weekend, while warmth will return to the nation’s mid-section.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures from the Plains to the East Coast, while cooler-than-normal conditions will cover the West. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal precipitation can be expected nationwide, except for drier-than-normal weather in parts of Montana and North Dakota.
