‘Fix’ to crop insurance cuts is part of budget deal

capitol_domeAn agreement to avoid three-billion dollars in cuts to crop insurance is part of the budget agreement passed by the House on Wednesday.

Although the cuts are still included in the budget bill, House Ag Committee chair Michael Conaway says House leaders have promised to reverse the provision in the upcoming omnibus spending bill.

“I take our leadership at their word when they committed to me and many of my colleagues that we will eliminate these harmful provisions in the not-so-distant future,” said Conaway.

Ag Committee ranking member Collin Peterson said he was pleased with the agreement to fix the crop insurance cuts and not open the farm bill.

“We have assurances that the cuts will be removed and the farm bill will not be raided,” said Peterson. “We produced a fiscally responsible and bipartisan farm bill in 2014 that saved 23 billion dollars. We’ve done our part.”
