The superintendent of the Minnesota Beef Expo says in the past decade 100 beef heifers have been given away as part of the event.

Jamie Purfeerst tells Brownfield the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program is hitting a milestone this year.

“We’re celebrating giving away 100 heifers.  What that means is that we asked producers from around the state to step up and serve as mentors and donate an animal.  100 producers have done that over the last ten years.”

She says the heifers go to young people just starting out in the beef industry.

“They want to go into it.  Maybe they show a different animal.  Or maybe they have an interest but they don’t have the farm or ability to make that investment.  So the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program helps those youths get involved and those producers serve as mentors for them.”

The Minnesota Beef Expo runs through Sunday at the State Fairgrounds in St. Paul.
