NPPC says no pork in prison a no-go

Pork loin barbqueThe National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) questions a reported decision by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to remove pork from the menu. A report in the Fort Worth-Star Telegram says no more bacon, pork chops, pork sausage or roasts will be served at federal prisons starting in 2016.

While a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons reportedly says the decision is based on an inmate survey of foods they want, not on religious dietary restrictions, the NPPC says it does not believe inmates don’t want to eat bacon, let alone any other pork product. The NPPC says pork is a good, nutritious value for the USDA commodity purchase program.
