Iowa’s corn crop could set new records

corn kernelsIt looks like this will a record-breaking year for Iowa corn growers.

The latest crop production report from USDA forecasts the state’s corn crop at a record 2.42 billion bushels, which would break the previous record set in 2009 by just over 8 million bushels.

An estimated statewide average corn yield of 183 bushels per acre would also be a new record high, exceeding the previous record of 181 set in 2004 and tied in 2009.

Iowa’s soybean crop is forecast to be 520 million bushels. That would be the second largest soybean production on record, one percent less than the 525 million bushels produced in 2005. However, the October 1st forecast soybean yield of 53 bushels per acre would be a new record, a half bushel above the previous record set in 2005.
