New invasive species reported in Michigan

Swede midge

The Michigan Department of Agriculture has confirmed a new invasive pest that is a serious threat to the state’s vegetable industry. Swede midge was confirmed in five organic production fields in Sanilac County, in Michigan’s Thumb. The pest feeds on crucifier plants including cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, and is a concern for conventional and organic growers. Larvae can cause distortion or even death of young plants. The ag department says it not yet known how the pest was introduced. Recommended measures of control include using clean transplants, crop rotations and insecticides. Michigan is the nation’s 7th largest vegetable producing state.
