More funding for specialty crops

USDA is awarding more than $113 million for specialty crop grants in 2015. In a news release, the department said $63 million will fund 755 specialty crop block grant program projects awarded by state departments of agriculture. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture will provide $50 million in grants through the Specialty Crop Research Initiative.

Brownfield states receiving research initiative project funding include:

Michigan State University, $6,515,655, for disease resistance in cucurbit crops

Michigan State University, $27,606, for stevia production

Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, $46,253, for organic production and food safety

University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisc., $226,906

USDA Agricultural Research Service, Peoria, Ill., $3,672,482

 

Five continuing grants were awarded $9.7 million including:

Michigan State University, $1,880,212

Michigan State University, $2,119,430
