The director of a global technology leader says the company sees huge potential in agriculture.

Tony Franklin tells Brownfield Intel started thirty years ago in the industrial sector.

“Most people think of Intel purely as the hardware company for PC’s.  The reality is, we believe that to make devices smarter, Intel technology is the smartest technology.  That includes hardware, software (and) the ability to pull in partners from across different industries.”

He says the technology needs in agriculture are similar to the healthcare industry.

“We’ve developed healthcare practices and analytics.  We have a joint-venture company called Care Innovations with GE.  We see the same opportunities in agriculture.  The opportunities are huge, and the need in society to solve these problems is huge, and we want to be a player.”

Franklin calls data the new oil, and says Intel can help bridge the gap between all the information and how to utilize it.

“We believe that through our experience in other industries, we can help make that data valuable to the farmers (and) processors.  We want to work with people to do that.”

Franklin was part of a roundtable discussion at the recent Oilseed and Grain Trade Summit in Minneapolis.
