DFA remains the nation’s largest milk marketer

DFA

Dairy Farmers of America remains the largest milk marketer in the country by a large margin. The annual Top 50 dairy co-op list from Hoard’s Dairyman says DFA handled more than 45 billion pounds of milk from 8,768 farms in 2014. That amounts to nearly 22 percent of total U.S. milk production.

Following DFA were California Dairies with 18 billion pounds of milk, Land O’Lakes with 12.9 billion, Farm First Cooperative of Wisconsin with 10.3 billion pounds marketed and Northwest Dairy Association of Seattle with 8.2 billion pounds.

While the top-5 remained unchanged from 2013, there was some movement just below that level. Select Milk Producers of New Mexico jumped from 9th to 6th with 6.6 billion pounds of milk. Wisconsin-based Dairy Business Milk Marketing Co-op moved up to 7th with 6.3 billion pounds. Rounding-out the top-10 were Foremost Farms of Wisconsin with 5.9 billion pounds; Associated Milk Producers Incorporated with 5.8 billion and Michigan Milk Producers with 4.4 billion pounds of milk marketed.

The Top-10 cooperatives marketed 60 percent of the nation’s milk production. The Top-50 co-ops handle just under 80 percent of the total U.S. milk production.

The complete Top 50 is in the October 10, 2015 Hoard’s Dairyman.
