NCC hopes for Canadian access in TPP deal

chickens-in-house-nccThe National Chicken Council (NCC) says it hopes there’s good news about Canada in the just-announced final agreement of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Council spokesman Tom Super tells Brownfield Ag News they hope the “long-protected” Canadian market will be opened to free trade for poultry which he says would be a win for U.S. chicken producers. He says, “When we negotiated NAFTA we thought we were going to get full access to the Canadian market but unfortunately it’s been a one-way street for the past several year for Canadian poultry into the U.S. while their supply management system restricts our poultry exports to Canada at 7.5%.”

Super says the Chicken Council strongly hopes for a strong commitment on enforcement on sanitary and phytosanitary measures.

National Chicken Council President Mike Brown says they look forward to reviewing the TPP agreement and hope it’ll be a “commercially meaningful and high standard agreement” that increases U.S. chicken exports.
