Good crops across Wisconsin

Cooler, more seasonal temperatures and a little rain did little to slow the harvest in Wisconsin last week. Frost was reported in Sawyer, Florence and Langlade Counties.

The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service says as of Sunday: 83 percent of the state’s corn silage has been chopped, 6 days ahead of the five-year average. Tonnage and quality have been excellent. 65 percent of the Badger State’s corn crop is mature with 7 percent harvested for grain. The crop is rated 78 percent good to excellent condition.

Soybean harvest seems to be the main activity as this week gets underway. As of Sunday 21 percent of the beans have been combined, 3 points behind the five-year average. Strong yields and 12-to-14 percent moistures reported. The crop is rated 81 percent good to excellent condition.

The potato harvest is 88 percent completed, 51 percent of the winter wheat has been planted and fall tillage is 19 percent done; the fastest pace in 15 years. A number of livestock producers are hauling manure, letting the corn get a little dryer in the field. Topsoil moisture is listed as 80 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus across the state with 27 percent surplus in the Southwest district.
