TPP talks drag on

tpp talks-2The Trans Pacific Partnership trade talks continued through the weekend in Atlanta and there were reports late Sunday evening that negotiators had reached an agreement “in principle”.

However, other news sources reported that the talks were now being extended in Monday, indicating some issues remained unresolved.

Dairy continued to be one of the final sticking points in the negotiations, according to reports. New Zealand continued to press for more access to the U.S. dairy market, while the U.S. insisted that the Canadians do the same for U.S. dairy products. Canadian officials, with national elections looming, are facing heavy political pressure to keep Canada’s dairy supply-management system intact.

Disagreements over intellectual-property protection for biologic drugs and automobile assembly were also blamed for the inability to gain final agreement.
