Mosaic reaches settlement with EPA/DOJ

Top Story IconThe EPA and Department of Justice say they’ve reached a settlement with one of the world’s largest fertilizer makers.

The agencies accused Mosaic Fertilizer of improper handling of hazardous waste at eight of its plants in Florida and Louisiana. The EPA says the violations threatened groundwater. The agency says waste piles from fertilizer production at those plants were as high as 500 feet covering more than 600 acres and contained highly acidic wastewater. Mosaic was accused of violating the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) which has established how waste must be disposed of, stored and handled.

As part of the $2 Billion settlement, Mosaic is establishing a trust fund to cover the future closure and treatment of hazardous wastewater at four Mosaic facilities in Florida and one in Louisiana.
