Southeast Missouri harvest begins

Southeast Missouri’s harvest has begun. Heading into the Delta Center field day, we got an update on the crops.Gene Stevens Delta Center EDITGene Stevens, plant science specialist at the University of Missouri Delta Center, says farmers here got luckier than many others in Missouri and parts of the Corn Belt…

“It started off really wet. It was kind of in pockets. A lot of Missouri, in central Missouri, farmers didn’t even get anything planted or were really late.”

Yet, the challenges continue, especially for weed management. He tells Brownfield,    “We had a lot of problems with weed control. Palmer pigweed management. And we have herbicides that can control those weeds but crop injury is pretty significant.”

But the expectation is for a pretty good crop year. Stevens says, “Overall, I think this is going to be a good year. They’re just starting to harvest the corn now and it’s looking pretty good. We’ve still got a ways to go on our soybeans and cotton and rice.”

The Delta Research Center hosts its 54th Annual Field day today in Portageville, Missouri.
