Southwest Minnesota farmer experiences fastest growing season of career

A grower in southwest Minnesota says 2015 was the fastest growing season of his 20 year farming career.

Matt Widboom raises corn, soybeans and cattle near Worthington and tells Brownfield conditions were suitable to start planting very early this spring.

“We could’ve started planting April first, if you believe in being honest about deadlines and starting dates.  Conditions were fine; we planted end-to-end dry, but enough moisture for germination.”

He says a lack of moisture in June and July may limit corn yields.

“I think when we get to the finish line, corn might be a bit disappointing because we did not have a lot of excess rain at a time when corn is going through gallons of it a day.”

Widboom began harvesting high-moisture corn recently and says he’s in the minority.

“(we’re) One of the few doing corn in our neighborhood.  Soybeans are well underway.  That harvest has really been solidly started this week.”

He planted a lot of late-maturing soybean varieties this year that are still green, but the pods are dry and Widboom says a frost would be welcome to dry the stems.
