Greater biodiesel adoption would lower costs
The cost of biodiesel would be lower if more of the U.S. production capacity was put to use. National Biodiesel Board Sustainability Director Don Scott tells Brownfield the country could be producing three billion gallons of the renewable fuel annually. He says biodiesel interests are trying to convince the EPA to increase biodiesel volumes in the Renewable Fuel Standard so that more of nation’s capacity is used.
“So if we can increase the volume in those standards, increase the utilization of that installed production capacity, we can actually reduce the cost of biodiesel on a per gallon basis,” Scott told Brownfield Ag News Wednesday at the National Biodiesel Board Headquarters in Jefferson City, Missouri. “As we move forward, if we use more biodiesel, we can make cheaper per gallon and we can do more to reduce greenhouse gasses at the same time.”
California’s Air Resources Board last week re-affirmed in its so-called Low Carbon Fuel Standard that biodiesel tops the list of liquid transportation fuels with the smallest carbon footprint. The new state standard in California lists biodiesel as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent and often by as much as more than 80 percent.
