California Air Resources Board puts biodiesel on pedestal

Biodiesel gets the best score among liquid fuels for its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  That’s according to California’s Air Resources Board, which just re-adopted its Low Carbon Fuels Standard.

Don Scott with the National Biodiesel Board says the figures from the California Air Resources Board reaffirm what the National Biodiesel Board has been saying about the renewable fuel.

“Biodiesel reduces emissions between 50 percent and 80 percent, as much as 85 percent relative to conventional fuel,” said Scott, during a conference call.

Biodiesel, most commonly made from soybean oil, has had its carbon emissions scrutinized more closely than conventional fuels, said Scott.

“We can be proud that biodiesel has endured that scrutiny, and proves once again that biodiesel is America’s advanced biofuel by nature of its superior reductions in emissions,” he said.

Scott says the California Air Resources Board findings suggest that goals to further reduce greenhouse gases and displace imported petroleum are achievable.
