A change in weather across the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, a chilly rain is falling from Michigan to southeastern Nebraska. Showers are also spreading into the Ohio Valley, where warm, humid weather prevails. In contrast, cool, dry weather covers the far upper Midwest, where Frost and Freeze Advisories were are in effect early Tuesday in North Dakota and northern Minnesota.

On the Plains, Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings were in effect early Tuesday for much of North Dakota. Meanwhile, a few showers linger across the central Plains. Elsewhere, warm, dry weather on the southern Plains favors the maturation of cotton and other summer crops, as well as winter wheat planting.

In the South, unsettled, showery weather prevails in most areas east of the Mississippi Delta, boosting soil moisture but hampering fieldwork. Farther west, short-term drought persists in many areas; on September 27, topsoil moisture rated very short to short included 77% in Mississippi, 72% in Arkansas, and 70% in Texas.

In the West, warm, dry weather prevails, except for cool conditions along the immediate Pacific Coast. Some Northwestern producers continue to await moisture before planting winter wheat; on September 27, California led the nation with topsoil moisture rated 95% very short to short, followed by 84% in Oregon.
