Practice good safety on the road

Farm machinery on the road

This is National Farm Safety and Health Week, Tom Thieding with the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association says it is a very busy and hectic time of the year as farmers harvest the summer crops. A few words of caution for when moving machinery on roads. For farmers, make sure farm implements are clearly marked with Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs and markers so other on the roadway know the size of the machine. Marker lights are essential after dark. If at all possible, pull over to let vehicles get by.

For drivers of other vehicles on the road, when seeing an SMV sign; slow down immediately. Thieding says most people do not realize that with the difference in speed how quickly a vehicle can get-up on a farm machine. Look for those side markers and lights to get a full perception of the size of the implement before attempting to pass and be patient.
