Purdue Extension plant pathologist Kiersten Wise says diseases are causing some yield loss in both corn and soybeans this fall.

She tells Brownfield Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) has been found in parts of the state.  “The impact of Sudden Death Syndrome has been spotty depending on where you are,” she says.  “Some fields are experiencing yield loss due to the diseases however in other fields – yield losses are hit or miss.”

Wise says for growers that have SDS – it will need to be managed before the field goes back into soybeans.

She says ear rots area starting to show up in parts of the state’s corn crop – primarily diplodia and gibberella ear rots.  “It’s just important to know that if you have any moldy grain – it is important to store it correctly,” she says.  “To mitigate any mold problems or mycotoxin issues associated with those grains.”

As harvest gets underway – she says it’s important to notate any diseases issues that are found.
