Cargill putting Texas beef plant on the market
Cargill says it’s going to sell its beef processing plant in Plainview, Texas that it shut down in early 2013. Cargill blamed the closure on overcapacity in the region because of drought, the impact of mandatory Country of Origin Labeling on cattle supplies and the effects of the fallout from lean finely textured beef called out in the mainstream media as “pink slime.”
Although the U.S. beef cattle herd has slowly begun to rebuild, Cargill says it won’t be fast enough to justify reopening that Texas plant. Cargill says they had hoped for a faster recovery from the drought and there’s still excess processing capacity in the region.
