Cover crops help repair compaction issues

A central Indiana farmer says cover crops are his solution to breaking up compaction brought on by the wet start to this year’s growing season.

Mike Shuter has been no-tilling his ground for over 30 years and says that isn’t changing.  “The cover crop rooting down is going to help break up the compaction caused by all that water setting on that ground for such a long period of time,” he says.  “We’d rather try to loosen that compaction that way – than to go in and rip it up and lose 30 years of benefit from no-till that we have in there.”

Shuter tells Brownfield cover crops help loosen the soil, create better water infiltration, and feeds the organisms under the soil that help promote healthy soils.
