Being proactive towards water quality

Ben Moore_Woodburn, IN_webNot everyone is blaming agriculture for Lake Erie’s problems.

Ben Moore, who farms near Woodburn, in Northeast Indiana, says it was good to hear from a Charter Boat Captain who isn’t just pointing a finger at agriculture for the Lake’s problems.

“He realized it’s several, it’s the dredging, the sewage plants, the urban development,” Moore said. “I was grateful that he didn’t just point his finger at the farmer and say you’re the problem and he actually took some time and got some education on it and realizes like the rest of us that there are several sources.”

Moore, who participated in the Nutrient Stewardship in Action Conference at Maumee State Park, tells Brownfield’ he’ll look at some different practices to help improve water quality.

“We going to look at doing some kind of fertilizer injection,” said Moore. We’ve been incorporating it, we have not for the past two years spread on the frost, just because of this and what we’ve learned, but we’re gonna probably look at some kind of a deeper placement.”

Moore says the conference was an opportunity to spend time with other farmers who are proactive and seeing firsthand what is taking place in Lake Erie.

  • OK….Lets talk about these issues one by one…..first..dredging of the rivers only moves around what was already there, runoff put it there….it’s not new. Second..sewage plants release TREATED WATER…..farm runoff is UNTREATED AND HAS OVER 150 KNOWN PATHOGENS….AGAIN….UNTREATED WASTE….! Third..urban development does have runoff issues….but….one dairy cows creates the same amount of manure as 20 people….so if you had in your watershed lets say 10 big cafo’s with about 60,000 cows they would produce the same as 1,200,000 people…..now you do the math and tell me that lawn waste is a issue worth talking about….? One more thing….that number of 1,200,000 IS THE DAILY PRODUCTION OF “CRAP”…..THAT’S RIGHT….EVERY DAY…!!! Fourth…injection deeper isn’t the answer….how deep is the root ball….after it passes that this stuff just becomes a POLLUTANT …..heading down hill towards the water cycle and you drinking water…..I question the wisdom of deep injection….? Thank you.
