The finance chair of Minnesota’s annual 4-H Purple Ribbon livestock auction says this year a major milestone was hit. Kent Thiesse tells Brownfield the first auction was in 1980.

“During this year’s auction we topped the five million dollar mark in total premiums in the first 35-plus years of the auction, so it was very successful.”

The 36th auction took place this past Saturday at the State Fair.

“We raised a total of $575,000 in premiums for 101 4-H members.”

Thiesse says Minnesota is unique in how the Fair handles selling the animals.

“We sell other Purple Ribbon exhibits besides just the grand and reserve champions.  Many state fairs only sell the grand and reserve, so 101 different youth were able to sell their Purple Ribbon exhibits.”

He says the extra premiums provide money that will help 4-H exhibitors pay for their college education while additional proceeds go towards the Purple Ribbon program.
