Chipotle sued over ‘GMO-free’ claim

A California woman is suing the Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant chain.

Colleen Gallagher’s lawsuit accuses Chipotle of false advertising over its claims that it uses only ingredients that are free of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Gallagher says Chipotle misled consumers with its GMO-free claim and deceived diners into paying more for their food.

Earlier this year, Chipotle announced that it was the first national restaurant to use GMO-free ingredients. However, the company put disclaimers on its web site noting that its meat comes from animals that are likely fed GMO feed and that many of the beverages it sells also contain genetically modified ingredients.

A Chipotle spokesman says the company will contest the lawsuit.
