Getting hay made is just the first challenge

For some livestock producers, getting hay made is just the first challenge.

Jeff Fisher, Ohio State University Extension educator in Pike County Ohio, says a concern some livestock producers have is with the quality of this year’s hay heading in to winter.

“I think we’re going to be looking at in some cases maybe processing that hay, trying to make it a little more digestible by shortening the fiber length so it will go through the animal a little faster and they can digest it,” Fisher said. “Using some options like distillers grains and things like that that have a high protein level and in some cases maybe even corn to provide energy.”
