Favorable weather across the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, cool, mostly dry weather prevails in the wake of a cold front’s passage. Clouds and a few showers linger, however, in the vicinity of the Great Lakes. Continuing a summer-long trend, temperatures remain nearly ideal for Midwestern corn and soybeans.

On the Plains, dry weather covers most of the region, favoring summer crop maturation. Lingering showers are confined to the southern Plains. Meanwhile, late-season heat is returning to the High Plains, particularly across Montana.

In the South, warm, humid conditions and isolated showers are occurring in the Gulf and Atlantic Coast States. The showers are causing only minor delays in fieldwork, which includes corn, rice, and sorghum harvesting. Meanwhile, cooler, drier air trails a cold front into the mid-South.

In the West, more than five dozen wildfires, in various stages of containment, are burning across California and the Northwest. Air quality degradations due to smoke remain widespread across the interior Northwest. Hot, dry weather dominates most areas west of the Rockies, maintaining heavy irrigation demands for immature crops. However, a few monsoon-related showers are dampening parts of Arizona and New Mexico.
