Weather

A largely favorable pattern across the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, mild, mostly dry weather favors corn and soybean development. In the upper Midwest, recently ended rainfall provided a favorable boost in topsoil moisture for immature summer crops.

On the Plains, scattered showers are mostly confined to Oklahoma. Elsewhere, dry weather favors fieldwork and summer crop maturation. On the northern Plains, where the spring wheat harvest is ahead of schedule, hot weather is temporarily returning in advance of an approaching cold front.

In the South, locally heavy showers linger along the Texas coast, where flash flooding remains a threat. Elsewhere, a weakening cold front is producing widely scattered showers. Despite recent showers, pockets of short-term drought persist from eastern Texas to the southern Atlantic States.

In the West, slightly cooler air is arriving in the Pacific Northwest. However, dry, breezy conditions and lightning strikes are maintaining a significant risk of Northwestern wildfire ignition and expansion, as well as erratic fire activity. Elsewhere, isolated monsoon-related showers are confined to the Southwest.
