July pork production new all-time high

 

The USDA reports domestic pork production during July was a new monthly record.

The average weight for hogs was a little lighter than last year, but market ready numbers have been larger than expected.

Pork came out at 1.973 billion pounds, up 10% on the year, with the slaughter 11% higher at 9.401 million head and the average live weight down three pounds at 280.

Beef was pegged at 2.046 billion pounds, down 2% from last year, with the kill 4% lower to 2.466 million head and average live weight 26 pounds heavier at 1,346. Veal production totaled 6.9 million pounds, an 11% decrease, with the slaughter dropping 25% to 36,500 head and the average live weight up 47 pounds at 322.

Lamb and mutton production was 12.9 million pounds, 7% less than a year ago, with the slaughter declining 11% to 187,100 head and average live weight gaining six pounds to 138.

Total U.S. red meat production for July 2015 was 4.039 billion pounds, 3% above July 2014. For the year to date, red meat production is 27.760 billion pounds, 1% more than this time last year. Cumulative pork production is 7% ahead of a year ago, with beef 4% behind, veal 18% slower, and lamb and mutton down 4%.
