Favorable weather continues across the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, warm weather is returning to the upper Midwest, accompanied by isolated showers. Elsewhere, sunny weather favors a rapid corn and soybean development pace.

On the Plains, shower activity is limited to the Dakotas, where minor small grain harvest delays are occurring. Elsewhere, warm, dry weather is promoting crop growth but boosting irrigation demands.

In the South, scattered showers and thunderstorms linger near the Gulf Coast. The rain is especially beneficial in the western Gulf Coast region, but is providing only localized relief. In some places, including Shreveport, Louisiana, and El Dorado, Arkansas, measurable rain last fell on July 5. Shreveport has also experienced 16 days of 100-degree heat since July 24, compared to zero such days during all of 2014.

In the West, mostly dry weather accompanies increasingly hot conditions. In large sections of the Pacific Coast States and the western Great Basin, the possibility of lightning without rainfall and dry, breezy conditions are maintaining the risk of wildfire ignition and expansion. In northern California, several wildfire mergers have occurred in recent days.
