A night of records and repeats at the Wisconsin State Fair

Another Grand Champion steer and another record price for the May family of Mineral Point. Lauren May’s crossbred steer brought $65,000 at the 47th annual Governor’s Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction. Roundy’s bought the 1,300-pound animal.

This was the second consecutive year that May had the top steer at the fair. Her brother, Brock had the Champion or Reserve Champion steer at the fair for six consecutive years starting in 2007.

The Grand Champion Hog exhibited by Matt Doney of Iowa County sold to Potawatomi Hotel and Casino for a record $35,000.

It is now a three-year-run for Calvin Reilly of Lafayette County and the Grand Champion Lamb. It sold to Meijer for a record $21,000.

With Governor Walker encouraging bidders from the stage, 25 animals were sold for a record $419,750 up $98,900 from last year’s record. Each exhibitor gets 80 percent of the money with 20 percent going to you scholarships, grants and auction expenses.

  • Champion Any Other Breed Steer exhibited by Jack Henderson of Racine County; Winning Bid of $22,500 by Anheuser-Busch
  • Champion Spotted Barrow exhibited by Ben Amera of Dane County; Winning Bid of $11,000 by Meijer
  • Champion Natural Colored Lamb exhibited by Kassandra Palzkill of Iowa County; Winning Bid of $8,000 by MillerCoors
  • Champion Maine-Anjou Steer exhibited by Allyson Whitcomb of Lafayette County; Winning Bid of $21,000 by Walmart and Coca-Cola Refreshments

In addition, several Wisconsin sports packages featuring several framed photographs were also auctioned off totaling $39,000
