Weather

A seasonal pattern for the Heartland

Early in the week, torrid weather will persist from Texas into the lower Mississippi Valley. However, slightly cooler air will arrive across the South as the week progresses. Meanwhile, heat will build eastward across the nation’s northern tier, reaching the upper Great Lakes States by mid-week. By week’s end, near- to above-normal temperatures will dominate the U.S., except for a turn toward cooler conditions in the Northwest. Most of the week’s rainfall, locally 1 to 3 inches, will fall in association with a cold front pushing into the eastern U.S. However, locally heavy showers will also occur in the Southwest, with some rain spilling onto the adjacent High Plains.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of near- to above-normal temperatures nationwide, except for cooler-than-normal conditions in the northern Rockies. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal rainfall across the majority of the country will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in Florida, parts of the Southwest, and across the nation’s northern tier from Washington to the upper Great Lakes region.
