Midday livestock markets

The main item of business in cattle country on Monday is the distribution of the new showlists. Bids and asking prices have yet to be established. Last week’s trade was delayed until Friday afternoon, but it turned out to be worth the wait. Northern dressed business ranged from 232.00 to 235.00, generally steady to $3.00 higher, live deals in the South ranged from 147.00 to 148.00, mostly 147.00. 2.00 to 3.00 higher.

Boxed beef cutout values are mixed in the morning report. Choice beef is up .41 at 233.66, and select is .18 lower at 229.11.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Joplin Regional Stockyards on Monday totaled 2,000 head. Compared to a light run last week, steers and heifers weighing less than 650 pounds were 3.00 to 5.00 higher, over 650 pounds steady. Demand was moderate and the supply was light. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 500 to 600 pounds traded from 242.00 to 285.00 per hundred weight. 5 to 6 weight heifers ringed from 221.00 to 236.00.

Pork carcass value is up .87 at 86.35 FOB plant.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade are .73 lower at 74.81 weighted average on a carcass basis, the West is 1.33 lower at 73.79, and nationally the market is 1.16 lower at 73.17. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 70.00 to 72.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis are steady to 1.00 higher from 47.00 to 56.00.

Last week’s hog kill totaled 2,137,000 head, 1.7% greater than the previous week and 14.3% larger than 2014. Chances are that the summer’s smallest kills are now behind us.

Despite another week of substantial production and tonnage, the pork carcass value jumped significantly higher on Friday, powered by stronger demand for bellies, loins, and hams.
