Biodiesel used as home heating fuel

The Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council is developing a marketplace for biodiesel as a home heating fuel. CEO Tom Slunecka says while many homes in the U.S. are heated by natural gas or propane, that’s not normally the case on the East Coast.

“On the East Coast there is still a lot of home heating oil used to heat not only their homes, but also major office buildings in New York City.”

He tells Brownfield with renewable fuel mandates growing along the East Coast, there needs to be more dialogue about bioheat.

“The availability of the fuel, the technical aspects of the fuel and the economics of the fuel, to make sure that they’re comfortable with continuing to grow that marketplace.”

Slunecka says bioheat already is a value-added product for soybean growers.

“Currently with the demand for biodiesel, whether it be for transportation fuel or the piece of the market that we have here on the East Coast now.  We’re adding 73 cents to every bushel of soybeans.”

Minnesota Soybean is hosting a forum August 19th in Mankato that addresses biodiesel and bioheat. For more information or to register, go to mnsoybean.org.
