A week of good weather in Ohio

The last time Ohio had 5+ days suitable for field work was back in May. Last week the Ohio field office of the National Ag Statistics Service reported 5.1 days suitable for field work.

The better weather allowed farmers to advance wheat harvest 25 points. As of Sunday, July 26, wheat harvest was 81 percent complete, still 17 points behind average. The wet conditions leading up to last week has taken a toll on wheat quality, sprouting, low test weight and increased vomitoxin levels have become issues. 61 percent of the crop was rated fair-to-good, 34 percent was rated poor to very poor.

67 percent of the Ohio corn was silking and three percent of the crop reached the dough stage. 70 percent of the corn crop is in fair-to-good condition, 20 percent is rated poor to very poor, the same as a week earlier.

68 percent of the soybean crop is blooming, 26 percent of the crop is setting pods. The condition of soybeans declined slightly from a week ago. 70 percent are in fair-to-good condition and 24 percent are rated poor to very poor.

First cutting alfalfa is 95 percent complete, 2nd cutting jumped 15 points last week to 56 percent complete.
